Fifty people descended unannounced on Normandien Farms in KwaZulu-Natal. Armed police officers, Members of Parliament, Department of Labour officials, Home Affairs representatives, and COSATU members forced open a security gate, ignored critical foot-and-mouth disease protocols, and directed racist abuse at senior staff. A compliant, law-abiding business employing 3,000 people lost control of its own premises.

This was not a legitimate labour inspection. It was an unlawful abuse of power by people who should know better.

Labour inspectors have real powers of access under the law. But those powers belong exclusively to certified labour inspectors and their designated assistants. They do not extend to Members of Parliament, who have no legal authority whatsoever to enter your premises during an inspection. Armed police presence used as a coercion tactic at a routine labour inspection is not oversight. It is intimidation, and it is an abuse of power.
