The recent orchestrated killing of labour lawyer, Chinette Gallichan, outside the CCMA offices in Johannesburg, is the latest example of a person killed most likely for doing her job well.
NEASA wishes to express its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Chinette for their loss. It is a senseless tragedy.
This murder is one in a growing list of lawyers, liquidators, investigative journalists, and the like who asked the right questions and paid the ultimate price.
South Africa has, to put it mildly, descended into a mafia state, characterised by lawlessness, rampant crime, guns-for-hire, and no consequences.
Under the rule of the seemingly unconcerned ANC government, which portrays itself as the champion of the people, South Africa has been transformed into a country where 6 351 people were murdered during the last quarter of 2025 (71 per day).
A country that ranks amongst those with the highest murder rate in the world, approximately 45 murders per 100 000 people. This is, on average, 959% higher than the average murder rate in other G20 countries.
There are many factors contributing to these disturbing statistics: an entrenched culture of violence and lawlessness, the inability or even willingness of the South African Police Service to properly investigate, a dysfunctional National Prosecuting Authority, and high levels of corruption throughout the criminal justice system.
Whichever reason you pick, they all find their roots in the same place – the dismal failure by the ANC to enforce law and order.
This failure of the ANC can largely be attributed to an incomprehensible blasé attitude of Government towards crime, or perhaps it is not so incomprehensible if one views the lack of action following the findings of the Zondo Commission, out of the approximately 1 500 implicated individuals, including many politicians and government officials, only 4 have been prosecuted.
The ANC’s condonation of the criminal activities of its own cadres has cultivated a culture of lawlessness; they have allowed the criminal state apparatus and intelligence services to be hollowed out, infiltrated, corrupted, and disabled, no doubt to the benefit of many unscrupulous cadres.
Under the ANC watch, organised crime has infiltrated the state and its functionaries to such an extent that it will take a monumental battle to dislodge them from their very comfortable perch.
Whether due to unwillingness, incompetence, fear, or complicity, the ANC cannot reel in this murderous crime monster they have created.
Whatever the reason for their inaction, one thing is clear: the collective ANC hand is dripping with the blood of hundreds of thousands of their own citizens.
