STEEL INDUSTRY: Proposal to drastically increase import duties to 70%

Dear Steel Industry employer

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition has recently proposed to increase the imposed duties on hot-rolled coil, currently 10% ad valorem +13% safeguard duties, to more than 70% on imports from China, Japan and Taiwan, which are actively supplying manufacturers in South Africa.

Hot-rolled coil is used to manufacture a vast array of products that are utilised by every South African on a daily basis. In addition to this, steel is also used in the manufacturing processes of non-steel products, ranging from the food you eat, the clothes you wear, to the roads you drive on, etc.

With the cost of living that is already a major burden on all citizens, higher tariffs will have a knock-on effect, ultimately shifting the cost burden to consumers.
