MEIBC: Urgent call for employers to organise.

Dear Steel Industry employer

The Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council will be conducting a new verification audit of membership levels as at 30 June 2026.

The outcome of this verification will determine whether the Council will be able to extend the current wage settlement agreement, as well as other future agreements to non-parties (those employers who did not sign the agreement).

Extension of this agreement will be devastating for many employers currently not bound, as it will significantly increase the labour cost component (R99 per hour cost-to-company for a general worker).

The only way this can be prevented is for NEASA and its allied employers’ organisations to have sufficient representation at the bargaining council to block the extension.

According to the last verification, we require employers collectively employing at least 25 000 additional employees to join NEASA urgently.

We therefore call on all employers who are not already NEASA members to join NEASA with immediate effect on the collective bargaining package at R60 per month. Although employers are welcome to join on NEASA’s ‘Gold’ or ‘Platinum’ packages, we propose the R60 collective bargaining package in order to speed up the process.

Should we not reach this target by 30 June 2026, it is highly unlikely that we will be able to prevent the extension.
