Gerhard Papenfus on PowerFM: The National Minimum Wage: Higher wages, fewer jobs?

The National Minimum Wage has increased to R30,23 per hour from 1 March 2026, including domestic and farm workers.

Gerhard Papenfus, Chief Executive of NEASA, shares his views in this  @POWERFM987  interview: In a country struggling with massive unemployment, poverty, and minimal growth, a minimum wage cannot create jobs.

Employers who cannot afford higher wages will either hire less or operate informally.

Government policies should focus on real economic growth, not window-dressing.
