EXPROPRIATION WITHOUT COMPENSATION

 

PARLIAMENT SAYS “NO” TO AMENDING THE CONSTITUTION

FOR NOW

 

The National Assembly yesterday rejected the ANC’s proposal to amend section 25 of the Constitution, to expressly permit expropriation without compensation.

 

NEASA applauds the members of parliament who rejected the Amendment Bill, which would have resulted in an economic disaster.

 

“Yesterday’s outcome is, however, only a temporary victory. The ANC confirmed that it will continue to pursue its land reform agenda, by virtue of alternative legislation. There will always be an attempt to accommodate the EFF’s more radical expropriation demands. This is not a time to be complacent”, said Gerhard Papenfus, Chief Executive of NEASA.

 

‘Expropriation without compensation’ has caused anarchy and chaos in all countries where it has been implemented, and to believe that it would have been any different in South Africa, is dangerously naïve.

 

If the Bill had not been rejected, it would have marked South Africa’s biggest mistake, with regard to the infringement of people’s constitutional property rights and our economy would have undoubtedly been beheaded by this legislative guillotine.

 

NEASA prays that the governing party will come to its senses and refrain from walking down the road as taken by Zimbabwe, Venezuela and their many unfortunate counterparts.
