In this open letter, the following issues are dealt with:

• The South African Steel Industry’s 35 years of decline

• The 10 percent customs duties already severely prejudices the downstream industry

• There is no downstream support for the protectionist measures

• Does South Africa really need AMSA?

• The threat of job losses by AMSA

• The South African steel downstream demands untaxed access to more affordable imported steel

• South Africa has to find an alternative model

• AMSA’s promise to upgrade its facilities does not benefit the steel downstream

• A leopard cannot change its spots – AMSA cannot be trusted

• A string of detrimental deals already entered into

• Downstream frustration will destabilise the Steel Industry

• Request for high level meeting between the steel downstream and government
