STEEL TARIFFS AND THE
EFFECTS ON DOWNSTREAM INDUSTRY
Dear Industry Employer
The Department of Trade and Industry recently announced that it has approved the recommendation by the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC) that the rate of customs duty on zinc-coated/galvanised steel, aluminium-zinc coated steel and colour coated steel be increased from ‘free of duty’ to a duty of 10%.
ITAC in turn claimed to have conducted the prerequisite preliminary probe into firms seeking the 10% tariff. They also claimed to have engaged with industry associations, labour, importers and exporters in order to gauge what effect an import levy would have.
NEASA is not aware of any such consultations with downstream manufacturers prior to a decisions in this regard being made.
In order to determine whether any consultation with downstream manufacturers indeed took place as well as the impact of the tariff, we require feedback from our members in the Industry.
