STEEL INDUSTRY: The effect of the toxic combination of IMPORT DUTIES and AMSA's INABILITY TO SUPPLY THE STEEL DOWNSTREAM
The effect of the
toxic combination of
IMPORT DUTIES
and
AMSA’s INABILITY TO SUPPLY
THE STEEL DOWNSTREAM
Below are business responses
- We have been put on allocation and still have to import and pay the duties anyway. We can not get steel locally until February next year. We do not know what the price will be then and competition with AMSA has been eliminated by them not supplying hot rolled coil at competitive prices to the other re-rollers and these re-rollers can not import, pay the duties, and then compete against AMSA, thus causing their competitors, Dufferco and Safal, to withdraw from the domestic market.
- Our business has been affected very extensively – an acute shortage of steel at 25-33% increased prices from the pre-lockdown period.
Also, if you are so fortunate to acquire steel, customers can simply not afford or are not prepared to pay for these excessive increases.
How is AMSA’s inability to supply the market affecting your business?
