STEEL INDUSTRY: The effect of the toxic combination of IMPORT DUTIES and AMSA's INABILITY TO SUPPLY THE STEEL DOWNSTREAM

The effect of the
toxic combination of
IMPORT DUTIES
and
AMSA’s INABILITY TO SUPPLY

THE STEEL DOWNSTREAM

Below are business responses

  • We cannot get galvanised steel coils for manufacturing our cheaper “economy range” of insulated panels. We are forced to use prepainted steel which is more expensive, thus depriving our clients of a cheaper alternative.
  • Last week Monday, we had 40 odd jobs in our shop and was only able to supply material for 4 of them. Huge shortages …
  • We lost 30% turnover because of shortages in material.
  • There is a shortage of material that they are supposed to supply. The prices of available material has all of a sudden shot up sky high. Why do they ask for an increase in levy for imports if they can’t even supply the market?
  • For example, galvanised coil is in such a shortage – there are companies with surplus order books yet their employees sit at home because there are no deliveries on material ordered. We have surplus quotes on orders involving sheeting, but we struggle to get the material at the quoted price, that is if coil is available. Flat products prices have also skyrocketed because of scarcity.

How is AMSA’s inability to supply the market affecting your business?
