AMSA vs the Steel Downstream

On 2 November 2020, we published a communique under the heading …
‘AMSA’s arrogance and the DTIC’s naivety KNOWS NO BOUNDS’

The following are comments by a few steel businesses:

• It is mindboggling how government has bent over backwards to protect AMSA with duties and safeguard duties that were unlawfully extended. It compares to SAA (South African Airways) where government invests in the worst possible industry in this day and age. The protection of AMSA also defies all logic especially in light of so many downstream business closures and job losses which stands testimony to the government’s catastrophic duty-policy.

• Surely the question is who benefits from all this? Once again, are the politicians that endorse the import tax being paid and favoured by the company which stands to gain?
