MEIBC
MAIN AGREEMENT EXTENDED
EMPLOYERS TO APPLY FOR EXEMPTION

Dear Steel Industry employer

As previously communicated, the Minister of Employment and Labour extended the MEIBC Main Agreement (the ‘Agreement’) to non-parties with effect from 17 October 2022.

The effect of this is that all employers within the sector will be compelled to comply with the provisions of this Agreement.

Although NEASA will be challenging this extension, it will take considerable time before the matter is determined by the Labour Court.

Therefore, all non-party employers are urged to, in the interim, apply for exemption from the provisions of the Agreement.

The outrageous act by the Minister of Labour of extending an Agreement which, not only failed to comply with the demands of the Labour Relations Act, but will also cause tremendous hardship in the Steel Industry. This development will require extraordinary measures to counteract. NEASA will assist each and every employer in this regard.

Most employers who are subjected to the draconian terms and conditions contained in the Agreement, and who do not obtain an exemption, will face an uphill battle in ensuring the survival of their businesses.

NEASA members who require assistance in this regard can contact Rona Bekker at rona@neasa.co.za .

Employers who are not affiliated with NEASA should immediately contact Monica Pretorius at monica@neasa.co.za or call 012 332 5350.
