Increase in National Minimum Wage
INCREASE IN
NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE
Dear employer
Despite NEASA’s warnings regarding the detrimental economic effects of an increased national minimum wage (NMW), especially on unemployment statistics, the Minister of Employment and Labour gazetted the new NMW on 7 February 2022.
The new minimum wages have been set as follows:
- the national minimum wage is R 23.19 for each ordinary hour worked;
- farmworkers are entitled to a minimum wage of R 23.19 per hour;
- domestic workers are entitled to a minimum wage of R 23.19 per hour; and
- workers employed on an expanded public works program are entitled to a minimum wage of R 12.75 per hour.
- Workers who have concluded a learnership agreement (as contemplated in section 17 of the Skills Development Act), are entitled to such allowances as depicted in Schedule 2 of the Gazette on the NMW.
These adjusted wage levels will come into effect as from 1 March 2022.
