Imposing of steel tariff by ITAC
MEIBC INDUSTRY ALERT
IMPOSING OF STEEL TARIFF BY ITAC
Dear Industry Employer
On 16 September 2015, the CE of NEASA wrote a letter to the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) requesting an opportunity for downstream manufacturers to address them on the impact that the newly implemented and proposed tariffs will have on their businesses.
ITAC, on 21 September 2015, responded that they had already, on 18 September 2015, published the following applications for comment:
an application for increase in the general rate of customs duty on steel wire rod from duty free to 10%;
an application for increase in the general rate of customs duty on steel reinforcing bar from duty free to 10%; and
an application for increase in the general rate of customs duty on structural steel from duty free to 10%.

ITAC also indicated that a number of further applications for introduction of tariffs are currently serving before them. We have requested that they provide us with further information regarding these tariff applications and will inform you once this information has been received.
In order to ensure that the input of SMMEs is not ignored once again, NEASA has proposed the establishment of an advocacy body for SMMEs in the Steel Industry.
