DIGGING A HOLE FOR SOMEONE ELSE …
by Gerhard Papenfus
In a previous article, ‘So it’s not all about the virus, Mr President’, I wrote about utterances made by ANC leaders, including the President, to the effect that, in a display of bizarre opportunism, Covid-19 presented the ANC with an unmatched opportunity to realise their policy of ‘radical economic transformation’; that is, taking from whites in order to enrich, not black people as it is was portrayed, but the black elite only.
In terms of ANC-thinking, Covid-19 provided an opportunity to dig a hole for white owned businesses, and thereby reshape the economic landscape according to an image befitting the ANC ideology.
This scheme went horribly wrong for the ANC. True to the ANC’s nature, the whole exercise was interspersed with corruption. As history has shown, this was bound to happen. Funds set aside for Covid-19 related measures, a large portion only available to BEE compliant businesses, for many was the signal they were waiting for; another opportunity for personal enrichment within the context of ‘radical economic transformation’.
The ANC fosters a climate of illegality. That, together with its ‘transformational’ agenda, created the climate and provided the space in which this corruption was to take place.
The saying that ‘there is honour among thieves’, proved not to be true in this instance. Some got more than others. Those who got less, took exception. The secret was exposed. Perhaps that is not exactly how it happened, but the corruption, the ‘redistribution project’, was not supposed to leak out; but it did.
The opportunity that Covid-19 presented to the ANC, albeit only in their imagination, will turn out to be its greatest nightmare. The nightmare is, in fact, already in progress. A Sunday Times headline yesterday reads ‘Covid-19 rips ANC apart‘. The split, according to the Sunday Times, is along pre-Nasrec factions; Ramaphosa versus Dlamini-Zuma. It is all about how to deal with the corruption allegations, especially now that it has been exposed.
What the ANC envisaged to be an opportunity, will further contribute to its gradual demise: “if you dig a hole for others, you’re sure to fall in it yourself”
