The ANC’s vs SA’s interests
IS THE PRESIDENT SERIOUS ABOUT CORRUPTION?
by Gerhard Papenfus
The recent Covid-19 related looting has caused the President to address members of the ANC on jobs for pals, nepotism and corrupt tender processes. Although this appears to be progress, in terms of the fight against corruption, the Covid-19 corruption pales in comparison to the looting that had occurred over the last two decades.
The question therefore is: is the ANC serious about dealing with all corruption (the R500 billion plus) in which the highest echelons of the ANC were involved, or is this just a smokescreen aimed at diverting attention away from the main culprits?
Another question is: how does the ANC intend dealing with corruption, especially in light of the fact that they have deliberately destroyed the only agency (the Scorpions) which, thus far, was capable in dealing with organised crime and corruption?
If the President is serious about dealing with corruption, he will bring about an independent body (something similar to the Scorpions) in order to effectively deal with organised crime and corruption. That, however, will challenge the very fabric of the ANC to its core and threaten its unity, the protection of which was, until now, the President’s top priority – to the detriment of the country.
The fact that the latest eruption of Covid-19 related corruption took place, is proof that these criminals (opportunists) are not taking the President’s anti-corruption drive seriously at all.
