COVID-19: State of Disaster lifted but Regulations Remain

The President, last night, announced that the Covid-19 State of Disaster will be lifted as of 5 April 2022.

The effect of this is that all regulations promulgated under the Disaster Management Act fall away with immediate effect, with the exception of a number of transitional arrangements which will remain for a period of 30 days.
 
These transitional regulations are as follow: 

• masks are still required to be worn indoors in any public venue including workplaces and public transport;
• gatherings are permitted to a maximum of 50% of a venue’s capacity, provided that a vaccination certificate or a negative PCR test (not older than 72 hours) are required for entry;
• gatherings are permitted to a maximum of 1000 people indoors, or 2000 people outdoors where a vaccination certificate or PCR test is not a requirement for entry, or 50% of capacity for smaller venues in order to maintain social distancing of 1 meter;
• travelers entering South Africa must produce a vaccination certificate or negative Covid-19 test, recognized by the World Health Organisation, not older than 72 hours; and
• the Covid-19 Vaccine Injury No-Fault Compensation scheme remains applicable. 

These transitional arrangements will fall away after 30 days, at which point Government intends to incorporate them into the regulations under the National Health Act.
