CONFUSION REIGNS OVER SDL PAYMENT HOLIDAY

Dear employer

The Minister of Finance, as well as the President, previously announced that employers will receive a payment holiday from paying Skills Development Levies (SDL) as from 1 May 2020, as part of the Covid-19 relief program.

However, the Minister of Higher Education has publicly stated that this will not be implemented and that employers who are impacted by Covid-19 may only apply for a deferral from these payments.

It seems that there may be a measure of political power play at work resulting in huge confusion in the market.

It is not clear what the current status of the SDL “payment holiday” is or what the responsibility of the employer is in respect thereof.

We will inform members as soon as clarity has been provided.
