AMSA vs the STEEL INDUSTRY

Stop the unfair steel trade practice by ArcelorMittal SA (AMSA).

By Gerhard Papenfus, Chief Executive (NEASA), 25 May 2021

The South African Steel Industry is in crisis. Not only does this severely impact each and every steel business in South Africa, it also indirectly impacts all South Africans. It affects the price of your house, your car, the office or factory in which you work, it impacts the farmer, as well as the factories that produce your food. All of these parties have steel requirements and we pay more for these facilities because of the import duties that protect a foreign-owned steel monopoly.

South Africa’s only primary flat steel producer, ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA), cannot sufficiently supply the South African steel market. Their steel, in many cases, is of inferior quality, but, notwithstanding this, they sell their steel at higher prices than imported steel. They are able to do this because they enjoy import protection by government against competitive imports. This has a knock-on effect on the price and availability of all products containing steel and thus, directly affects South African consumers.

This threatens the competitiveness of steel companies within the steel downstream. Consequent to the threatening of the competitiveness of companies, their sustainability is also threatened and ultimately, their survival.

It begs the question: how is it even possible that a foreign-owned monopoly can be protected in this manner by our own government, to the detriment of all other companies in the South African steel downstream?

How is it that the outcry of the steel downstream has been ignored for all these years?

This is an unjustifiable unrighteousness which has to be stopped, because if it isn’t stopped, it will undoubtedly cause the demise of the entire South African steel downstream.

We therefore ask of all South Africans, not only those who are directly involved in the Steel Industry, but all South Africans, to get involved in this campaign to stop this unfair trade practice.
