ADDRESSING HUNGER

by

ESTABLISHING MICRO-FARMERS

Poor economic conditions, resulting in a lack of employment opportunities, as well as a shortage of skills and knowledge, have left many South Africans destitute, without a way to fend for themselves. This poses an imminent threat to socio-economic stability in South Africa.

It is the social responsibility of all South Africans to play their part in addressing this desperate state of affairs.

NEASA invites employers (or any individual) to participate in a life-changing initiative that helps eradicate hunger and poverty, while simultaneously empowering communities. This project is aimed at all sectors of a community (including the youth, the aged, the disabled, military veterans and women’s organisations), and is driven and facilitated by NEASA and the Institute for Rural and Community Development NPC (IRCD).

The NEASA ‘Garden of Life’ project is a micro-farming program that focuses on teaching people the basic skills of becoming self-sustainable through small scale vegetable farming in areas that would normally be deemed unsatisfactory for crop development. Through the utilisation of a very basic hydroponic technique, micro-farmers can plant sustainable crops and be self-sufficient within 8 – 12 weeks.

The system can be implemented and replicated rapidly, and a ‘Garden of Life’ micro-farmer can be trained and have his/her crops planted within a very short period of time. Because of its simplicity, the project can be initiated in any community and various facilities (i.e., schools, creches, churches, children’s homes, old-age homes and private homes), at a minimal cost determined on a project-to-project basis.

A company or organisation can sponsor the training of a group of people, such as employees, or anyone associated with any of the abovementioned groups. The training is done in groups of up to 50 people at a time.

A specialist team will develop a specific plan for the community identified by the sponsor. Projects for companies or identified organisations can also be implemented. This includes sustainable development initiatives and community upliftment programs. The team will also provide project management, mentoring, financial management and project reporting.

This project will, if required, contribute to your BBBEE-scorecard improvement, including socio-economic development, enterprise development and skills development.
